Jhansi youth death: Conflicting accounts on encounter add doubt to police version

first_imgWhile the family of Jhansi resident Pushpendra Yadav have alleged that he was killed in a staged encounter, the police version has come under further scrutiny after conflicting statements issued by two district police officers.According to the statement by Jhansi SSP Om Prakash Singh on the night of the incident, the Station House Officer of Moth, Dharmendra Singh Chauhan, was returning to Jhansi from Kanpur in his private car on October 5 after a two-day leave, when he received a call from a local resident, purportedly Pushpendra Yadav. The person on the other end of the phone asked Mr. Chauhan to meet him at an intersection, the SSP said. Mr. Chauhan was “alone” and in plainclothes, the SSP said, adding that as soon as the SHO stopped his car and rolled down the window to look around, the accused fired at him.The SHO’s description of the incident, however, does not tally with the SSP’s statement. Talking to the media from his hospital bed, where he is recovering from injuries allegedly suffered during the encounter, Mr. Chauhan said he had gone out from his police station to patrol and check duty on the night of the incident. He said he was accompanied by a constable, Saurabh, and both of them were in a private car. “At the Bamrauli intersection around 9 p.m., a person waved (at us) and I stopped the car. He came close and pulled out his country pistol and fired,” said Mr. Chauhan, not mentioning any phone call. When asked whether he was returning from his leave, as stated by the SSP, the SHO said he had returned from leave the same day and gone out for patrol. The SHO claimed the accused shot and fled with his mobile phone and vehicle.Meanwhile, amid questions over the authenticity of the encounter, the police released a list of crimes attributed to Pushpendra Yadav to establish his criminal record as an alleged mining mafia member. However, all the five cases listed by the police related to inter-personal disputes, village-level offences or prohibitory action to prevent law and order disturbances. All cases pertain to 2014 and 2015.The charges against Pushpendra Yadav included enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married woman, criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt and verbal threats. The police also claimed that Pushpendra Yadav’s truck was fined twice in 2018 for illegal mining. It was served a fresh challan on September 29 and seized.Pushpendra Yadav’s body was cremated by police on October 7 night after his family refused to take his body till a murder case is lodged against the police officer who shot him. The family accused the police of cold-blooded murder. His brother, Rabindra Yadav, a CISF jawan, claimed Pushpendra Yadav did not have any criminal record and never owned any weapon.Pushpendra Yadav’s wife Shivangi on October 9 alleged that her husband was killed because he had threatened to expose the local SHO for demanding bribe from him in return for promising to free his seized truck. She said her husband had already paid the police ₹1.5 lakh but they were harassing him for more. Pushpendra Yadav had threatened to make the recordingss of their bribe dealing to go “viral”, she said. “If he was at fault, you could have summoned him or taken him to jail. The police had his phone number,” she said.Ms. Shivangi Yadav further said that if her husband had shot the SHO and escaped with his car, as claimed by police, he would have been shot in the back and not in the head. “They caught hold of him and killed him,” she alleged.Akhilesh demands high-level probeSamajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, after meeting the family of the deceased, said a probe monitored by a sitting High Court judge would bring out the facts, as he questioned the police version. “This is not an encounter. The police committed a murder,” Mr. Akhilesh Yadav said.“No one believes the police story. Nobody is satisfied with the story and sequence of events narrated by the Jhansi Police administration,” he said. The SP chief also demanded that a murder case be lodged against the SHO, as demanded by the family. “You can estimate how big the conspiracy is when all officials and the government come together to save the station officer,” Mr. Akhilesh told reporters in Jhansi.last_img read more

Spence and Robinson end fasts call on Canadians to fix years of

first_imgBy Kenneth JacksonAPTN National NewsOttawa – The fast may be over, but the fight continues. That was the message delivered Thursday as Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence and Elder Raymond Robinson officially ended their weeks-old fast.“It does not end because the hunger strike ends. The fight continues. We have mobilized a nation,” said Spence spokesman Danny Metatawabin at a press conference Thursday. “You, Canadians, we want our rightful place as well…We will stand up. We will persevere. We want to be acknowledged.”Spence couldn’t attend the press conference but Robinson was there, as well as Liberal leader Bob Rae, NDP MP Romeo Saganash and Saskatchewan Assembly of First Nations regional chief Perry Bellegarde.Metatawabin said Spence was bedridden under doctors’ orders. She went to the hospital Wednesday and was put on an IV. She may be released later Thursday or Friday.Robinson, from Cross Lake, Man., said he also attended the hospital but when he was being seen a by a nurse he said she questioned why he was there, how he got there and had no clue Robinson had been on a fast for 43 days. Robinson said he felt the nurse was almost racist and walked out without being assessed. He said his fast, next to Spence’s side, was a rollercoaster ride for him and his family.“It is with mixed emotions, a lot of stress, joy, jubilation that I make the statement today that the journey of my hunger strike ends,” said Robinson before taking questions from media. “It’s a rollercoaster ride for my sake, my family’s sake…for the journey I took upon myself to try and get some kind of word out to general population in respect to the way my people have been treated over the course of these generations.”Robinson said it’s amazing in this day and age that First Nation people still struggle to control what’s theirs – land, water and resources – while the federal government tries to take control of it all.He said when Europeans first arrived they survived because of Indigenous peoples.“We nurtered you guys and gave you our medicine. You guys would have died without our medicine, without us teaching you how to live and survive in this country,” he said. “We forged a relationship with you guys hoping that you would be our partners in everything – 50/50. You smoked our Pipe to symbolize the relationship we wanted to forge with you.”But it didn’t work that way.Through time the non-Aboriginal society thought they could take everything from the First Peoples said Robinson. That includes their children and Indian Residential Schools.“I’m an Indian Residential School survivor. I went to three Residential Schools,” he said. “The government of Canada tried to take my identity away from me, my life, my language, my being a First Nation person to try assimilate me into a foreign culture I don’t know about.”This rooted his 43-day fast that began a day after Spence began hers on Dec. 11. They survived on tea and fish broth. But there was more to the fast.“To tell the world, to tell Canada that enough is enough,” said Robinson. “Can’t you just leave us alone, can’t we just be ordinary people in this land, can we have the same opportunities you guys live in a daily basis…can I be received as a human being in my own land.”He said Bill C-38 gives the government power to do what they wish in First Nation territories. Bill C-45 takes control of their resources he said.To make changes such as Robinson is saying the government is to consult with First Nations as per the Constitution Rae reminded reporters in the gallery. That was the main reason behind the Idle No More movement that now includes hundred of years of oppression.“This is your fight too. These acts, these bills will kill us all,” said Robinson. “Fight with us and make sure these bills don’t go anywhere.”Bill C-45 became law just before Christmas.APTN National News reported early Wednesday morning that Spence had already decided to end the fast but news of the end came much later in the day.Spence and Robinson officially agreed to end their fast based on a 13-point plan endorsed by the Assembly of First Nations, the Native Women’s Society of Canada, the NDP and Liberal caucuses. The plan calls for such things as proper funding for education, respecting treaty rights and consulting First Nations on changes to their lives.Spence, however, was facing pressure from her own band council to end the fast and a delegation from Attawapiskat was to leave for Ottawa Wednesday to hand-deliver a letter urging her to quit the protest or face removal as chief. Her health was also starting to fail and she had been considering a way to end the protest on a high note after realizing she would not be able to obtain her goal of forcing a meeting between the prime minister, the governor general and First Nations leaders.Spence’s teepee on Victoria Island became a type of pilgrimage destination for many First Nations people across Canada who came to visit her, offer her gifts and blessings.“We end our hunger strikes with signed commitments from elected First Nations leaders and opposition parties to urgently carry forward our action plan which ensure that our treaty rights are recognized, honoured and fully implemented,” said Spence in a released statement. “Indigenous peoples have lived well below the poverty line in a country that is considered one of the wealthiest in the world. We are no longer idle and precedence has been established over this past six weeks. There’s no going back, our voices have been heard and now I ask for your involvement to move our agenda forward.”The opposition leaders said they will use the 13-point declaration as a “blue print” going forward to push Prime Minister Stephen Harper on First Nation issues.“I view this document as a blueprint for the future in our relations with First Nations in this country and what the NDP is saying, essentially, is we are endorsing this document because we want to accompany you on this road, on this journey to a better future, for a better tomorrow for your communities,” said Saganash.Rae said the document is also a sign of political will.“I think you have to see the document as an expression of political will on our part, and on the part of the AFN, and on part of the (NDP), and on part of a lot of other people on behalf of lot of other Canadians. I think there are a lot of Canadians who want us to move forward,” he said. “Is it something that the Conservatives are going to sign on to tomorrow? Some of it they might, some of it they might not. I think there is a process of public persuasion that needs to go on. I accept that.”That begins with education said Metatawabin.“We need to educate the Canadian people of who we are. I hold this feather in honour because it recognizes a symbol, a closeness I have with the Creator, but you, the average Canadian, probably just think it’s a feather,” he said. “This is who we are. We are spiritual people. It goes back to the treaties. There is a spiritual intent and we have to bridge that gap.”kjackson@aptn.ca@afixedaddresslast_img read more

The US Is Downright Mediocre At The World Baseball Classic

Share on Facebook Italy47-1.49 Dominican Republic1441.49 American fans like to think of the U.S. as the home of baseball; they even tried to mythologize it into the game’s place of origin at one point. And, yes, the majority of the game’s best players are from America. But in the World Baseball Classic, arguably the highest-profile event in international baseball, the U.S. is merely ordinary: It’s 10-10 over the tournament’s history, despite playing a relatively weak slate of opponents over the years. What gives? The WBC has always held more appeal for international players and fans, whose national teams take it far more seriously than the U.S. team does. The U.S. seldom sends its best players to the event, for better (it reduces the risk of key injuries in games that are essentially treated as exhibitions) and worse (it deprives the game of its best players playing on a worldwide stage). That means we won’t be seeing the likes of Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw in this year’s Classic, much less living legend Mike Trout. As a result, the U.S. has gotten mediocre results on the field, far from what might be expected out of a country that still considers itself baseball’s standard-bearer. Qualcomm and Apple kick off latest patent case

first_imgQualcomm, based in San Diego, California, is one of the world’s biggest mobile chipmakers.  Shara Tibken/CNET Apple and Qualcomm kicked off the latest chapter in a long-running legal battle over patents and licensing agreements in the chipmaker’s hometown of San Diego, California, on Monday.Qualcomm, which supplies chips and modems for much of the mobile phone industry, says Apple infringed on three of its patents in some versions of the popular iPhone. The chipmaker wants up to $1.41 per iPhone that infringed on its intellectual property sold during a certain period between 2017 and 2018. The exact figure was not disclosed, though it’s estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars or more. That sum would be a drop in the bucket for Apple — which briefly became a $1 trillion company last year — but a victory for Qualcomm would help to brandish its reputation as a mobile components innovator. “Qualcomm, although it doesn’t make a smartphone — it doesn’t have a product that you and I would buy — it develops a lot of technology in smartphones,” David Nelson, the lead attorney representing Qualcomm, said in an opening statement on Monday. The trial concerns three patents that Qualcomm claims Apple infringed on. One patent allows a smartphone to quickly connect to the internet once the device is turned on. Another deals with graphics processing and battery life. The third lets apps on your phone download data more easily by directing traffic between the apps processor and the modem. 2:13 Apple vs. Qualcomm: Court battles explained See All Aug 31 • Your phone screen is gross. Here’s how to clean it Apple During opening remarks, both sides zoomed in on the patent that focuses on boot-up technology when the phone is turned on. Nelson said the technology in the patent was “foundational” to the company’s work, long before it was registered. Apple claims Qualcomm stole the idea for that innovation from then-Apple engineer Arjuna Siva, who the company said discussed the idea with Qualcomm engineers in an email.”This one is truly the most outrageous allegation in the case,” Juanita Brooks, lead counsel for Apple, said of the infringement claim in opening statements. “They took the idea from us and ran down to the patent office.”A long battleThe courtroom clash between Apple and Qualcomm is part of a wide-ranging legal saga. Two years ago, the Federal Trade Commission, aided by heavyweights including Apple and Intel, accused Qualcomm of operating a monopoly in modem chips. The agency argued Qualcomm’s high royalty rates stopped competitors from entering the market, which has driven up the cost of phones and hurt consumers. That trial took place in January, and the parties are currently waiting for a decision from US District Judge Lucy Koh. The San Diego trial, presided over by US District Judge Dana Sabraw, is more technical than the other fronts of the legal battle. But it could have implications on how your phone is made and how much it costs. The trial also sets the stage for an April meeting between the two companies over licensing deals. The two companies have been arguing over royalties Apple paid Qualcomm for licensing the chipmaker’s technology. Apple paid $7.50 per iPhone, but Apple COO Jeff Williams testified in January that the price should have been a fifth of that price. The iPhone was first introduced in 2007, but the company didn’t start using Qualcomm chips for network connectivity until 2011. In 2016, the company started using Intel modems in some models of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Now, Apple has opted for Intel’s modems over Qualcomm’s in all its latest phones. ‘Eureka’ and ‘Maverick’After opening statements on Monday, Qualcomm’s first witness was James Thompson, the company’s chief technologist. He described Qualcomm’s relationship with Apple. Uber offers free helicopter rides for a day in Thailand

first_imgUber Technologies Inc have chosen Bangkok, known for its chaotic traffic, as the first city in Southeast Asia to introduce a one-day free trial for its helicopter service, after launching it in key global metro cities, including Bangalore. Chan Park, Uber’s regional general manager for Southeast Asia, said Bangkok is one of the worst cities in the world for traffic congestion.”This provides high potential for alternative transport platforms,” Bangkok Post quoted him as saying on Thursday. Thailand is among its three fastest-growing markets for its taxi app service in Southeast Asia, it said. Uber Technologies Inc, the smartphone-based cab service company will offer free helicopter rides on demand to Bangkok customers on Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Amazon buys Eero mesh router startup adding fuel to its inhouse Alexa

first_imgAmazon has announced its plans of acquiring ‘Eero’, the startup that is focussed on mesh home routers.  Eero makes use of a mesh network to produce wireless routers and extenders that provide better coverage for home Wi-Fi networks and makes it easy to have fast and reliable Wi-Fi all over the house. Eero routers are designed to overcome coverage and dead zone issues encountered through traditional routers. Multiple access points are used to provide coverage to an entire home or apartment with a strong Wi-Fi signal. Amazon says that this deal will “help customers better connect smart home devices.” It will make it easier to set up Alexa-compatible gadgets if Amazon also controls the router technology. Amazon SVP Dave Limp said in a press release that “We are incredibly impressed with the Eero team and how quickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work. We have a shared vision that the smart home experience can get even easier, and we’re committed to continuing innovating on behalf of customers.” While the deal is good news for Amazon investors, many Eero users have expressed their disapproval of the deal. Amazon has faced criticism about how Alexa listens in people’s homes, and can be a threat to user privacy. Existing Eero users have voiced their concerns along the same lines: Eero support has tried to put customers worry to rest with a tweet, saying, “Eero does not track customers’ internet activity and this policy will not change with the acquisition”. Eero is not the first router startup to be acquired by Amazon. Amazon has acquired startups like  Ring and Blink, in recent years, with a vision to launch its own in-house Alexa smart home ecosystem. Details of the deal have yet to be disclosed. Head over to Techcrunch for more insights on this news. Lessons to be learned from laptop ban says IATA

first_img Tuesday, November 14, 2017 << Previous PostNext Post >> Travelweek Group Posted by ABU DHABI — Better information sharing and coordination on security measures among governments and with the industry is essential, said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO, in a keynote address to the IATA AVSEC World Conference in Abu Dhabi.“The failure to share information among states manifests itself in many ways. The differing responses by governments to the threats that resulted in this year’s ban on Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) on some routes by the US and UK is an example of the confusion that can result,” said de Juniac.“Governments and the industry are partners in aviation security. Airlines have operational know-how. Governments have the financial and intelligence resources. We have to put them together effectively in a continuous dialogue focused on improving security.”No one can predict the next security challenge but “our common defense is stronger when governments and industry work together,” he said. “And if we can avoid long term extraterritorial measures, focus on global standards, share information and develop technology efficiently, our hand is strengthened even further.”More news:  Virgin Voyages de-activates Quebec accounts at FirstMates agent portalGovernments must avoid the long-term use of extraterritorial measures and ensure that airlines are not left to bear the financial brunt of unplanned expenses for an indeterminate period, he added.“Threats to aviation are real. And we understand that sometimes unilateral additional measures of an extraterritorial nature may be unavoidable. But these cannot be long-term solutions and airlines should not be caught in the middle, picking up the pieces and bearing unplanned expenses for an indeterminate period when governments cannot agree on measures needed for the security of their citizens.”The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirement that airlines conduct interviews with passengers flying to the US is an example of an extraterritorial requirement, he said. “Such interviews are traditionally done by government authorities. In the short term airlines may seem to be the best positioned to conduct the interviews. But in the long-term, if governments believe that these interviews are critical, then governments themselves should work together to dedicate the resources needed to fulfill that function.”center_img Lessons to be learned from laptop ban, says IATA Share Tags: IATAlast_img read more
